Evening showers cool Ahmedabad, light rain predicted for today

On Friday evening, Ahmedabad experienced a refreshing drop in temperature as light to moderate rain graced the city. Areas like Satellite, Shyamal, and Prahladnagar saw more substantial showers, while other regions enjoyed light drizzles.

IMD has forecasted continued light rain in Ahmedabad and surrounding districts including Mehsana, Gandhinagar, Banaskantha, Patan, and Botad due to a localized weather system.

Innovative rainwater harvesting system to combat monsoon flooding

To address monsoon flooding and rainwater drainage issues, AMC is implementing a modular rainwater harvesting system with catchpits at approximately 1,000 locations. These will be installed on the ring road, from Pakwan Junction to Keshavbagh, and from Airport Circle to Dafnala, including newly constructed roads. This initiative is expected to prevent waterlogging and recharge groundwater levels.

If successful, the system will be expanded to an additional 1,500 locations. Tenders have been issued, marking Ahmedabad as the first city in the state to introduce this system.

Motorists advised to avoid 28 underpasses prone to waterlogging

AMC has warned motorists to avoid 28 underpasses prone to waterlogging. To address this, the Water Supply Committee has approved the installation of water pumps at 18 bridges, at a cost of ₹1.15 crores, to prevent water accumulation.

However, motorists are advised not to use these underpasses when water levels rise to avoid accidents. Pumps will be installed at locations including Stadium Usmanpura, Akhbarnagar, Maninagar (South), Parimal, Kubernagar, Mithakhali Pedestrian (Gandhigram), and Mithakhali Underpass. These measures will be in place for six months to ensure safety during the monsoon season.

Ahmedabad City Police has initiated the "Maa Subhadra Swasthya Rath" program aimed at improving women's health. The campaign includes mammography and Pap test camps.

Police stations in Zone-3 plan to offer free cancer diagnosis to over 500 women by the next Rath Yatra. This health initiative had commenced yesterday and aims to provide vital screenings to women in the community.

Gujarat High Court notifies AMC over hazardous hoardings

The Gujarat High Court issued a notice to the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) and its town planning and estate department officials regarding hazardous hoardings across the city.

This follows a public interest litigation (PIL) by social worker and weekly newspaper owner Parvatiben Sharma, who highlighted the neglect of dangerous hoardings that pose a risk to public safety.
