Ahmedabad's icoic Narendra Modi Stadium is ready to host two crucial IPL 2024 playoff matches. Today, the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) and Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) will face off in Qualifier 1. Tomorrow, Rajasthan Royals (RR) and Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) will compete in the Eliminator.
However, the scorching temperatures, ranging from 45-46°C, will be a significant challenge. Even during the evening match time, temperatures are expected to remain high, between 41-44°C, posing a dual challenge of heat and match pressure for the players.
With temperatures nearing the 45°C mark, the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) has issued a red alert, forecasting similar extreme heat until 24 May. This heatwave has led to numerous health issues among residents, with 4,710 heat-related cases reported by the 108 emergency services from 1 to 19 May.
The AMC health department has directed all urban health centres to remain open until 7 pm, and all municipal parks will be accessible from 6 am to 11 pm until further notice. Citizens, particularly children and the elderly, are advised to stay indoors and stay hydrated.
Due to the ongoing redevelopment work at Kalupur Railway Station, the VIP lounge facility has been closed. The first-floor retiring room will also be closed shortly. This extensive redevelopment project is expected to last for three years, during which passengers will not have access to VIP facilities. Many offices have already been relocated, with the remaining few set to move soon.
Today's IPL Qualifier between Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) and Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) at Narendra Modi Stadium will see stringent security measures. Over 3,000 police personnel, as well as 5 DCPs, 10 ACPs, and more than 800 private security guards, will be deployed in and around the stadium.
The road leading to the stadium from Janpath T to the main gate via Krupa Residency T to Motera T will be closed to vehicular traffic. Towing services will ensure that haphazardly parked vehicles are removed.
The Ahmedabad Urban Development Authority (AUDA) has announced plans to upgrade the 5.9 km stretch of road from the Mumatpura underpass to Sanskar Dham on the SP Ring Road. The current four-lane road will be expanded to six lanes at a cost of ₹52 crores.
Enhancements include surrounding greenery and a zigzag-shaped walkway alongside the road. The width of the road will increase from 36 metres to 45 metres, addressing future traffic congestion concerns.
