Heavy rainfall causes severe waterlogging and sinkholes

Ahmedabad experienced 5 inches of rainfall within 4 hours on Sunday, resulting in severe flooding in the western parts of the city and on highways. The heavy rains caused major traffic issues due to sinkholes and flooded underpasses.

A massive sinkhole formed on the city's outskirts, with a video showing water pouring into the caved-in road. The MeT department predicts continued heavy rains in Gujarat over the next four days.

Gujarat Police conducted security review for upcoming Rath Yatra

Recently, Gujarat Police conducted foot patrols in Ahmedabad to review security arrangements for the upcoming Rath Yatra of Lord Jagannath, scheduled for July 7. Joint Commissioner of Police Neeraj Kumar Badgujar stated that over 200 police officers participated in the patrol to ensure the event's smooth conduct.

Rickshaw Union suspends online bookings for 5 days

The Ahmedabad Rickshaw Chalak Ekta Union will halt online rickshaw bookings from July 1 to July 5 due to unresolved issues with private companies. Key concerns include the operation of two-wheelers with illegal plates, no charges for pick-up or trip cancellations for rickshaw drivers, and imposed commissions.

The union plans to hold a peaceful protest until the issues are addressed.

Municipality cancels tree felling plan at Panjarapole Junction

In response to strong opposition from local residents, the municipality has cancelled its plan to cut down 91 trees for a flyover at Panjarapole Junction. Public pressure led to the preservation of all trees, and 19 trees, aged between 30 to 35 years, will be relocated. The design of the municipal service road will be adjusted to save the trees.

Gujarat University takes over admissions amid GCAS portal issues

Due to objections received via the GCAS portal, the education department has transferred the admission process to Gujarat University. A meeting chaired by the chancellor addressed issues regarding UG and PG courses.

Offline admissions, based on merit, will begin on July 7. The second-round admission process will run from July 1 to July 3, with new registrations and application corrections from July 4 to 6.
