Ahmedabad’s Kalupur Bridge, which has stood for 108 years, and the 83-year-old Sarangpur Bridge have officially closed for a significant renovation project after suffering extensive damage due to a rat infestation.

The project, valued at ₹439 crore, is a collaborative effort between the Indian Railways and the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC).

Bridge expansion to ease future traffic congestion

The renovation aims to expand both bridges to four lanes, significantly improving traffic flow. The estimated completion time for this project is 18 months.

The closure of these key structures poses challenges for commuters accessing Kalupur Railway Station, as it is a primary route for passengers. To mitigate the disruption, passengers can now enter the station through its old entry gate and exit via the west side footbridge. A newly constructed 30-foot road has been established to facilitate connection between the station and the main thoroughfare.

Additionally, traffic patterns have been altered for those travelling from Sarangpur Circle to Kalupur Railway Station. Commuters are advised to route through Sindhi Market to Panchkuva. For ththe ose heading towards Kalupur, an alternative route via Motimahal Hotel has been designated. Authorities have ensured that one one-way road remains open from Kalupur Railway Station for travel towards Sarangpur, Raipur, Kankaria, or Geeta Mandir.

The approach to the Gandhi Ashram to be closed

In related developments, the approach to the Gandhi Ashram will also face closure from the 9th of November as part of an ongoing redevelopment initiative for the iconic site along the Sabarmati River.

In response to the anticipated disruptions, two new parking lots have been created to maintain access to the Ashram. This redevelopment project is projected to be completed by 2026.
