Ahmedabad is set to witness a remarkable addition to its skyline with the upcoming construction of a barrage-cum-bridge along the Sabarmati River. This innovative project, proposed as part of the Sabarmati Riverfront Phase 2 initiative, aims to connect the Camp Sadar Bazaar area with Torrent Powerhouse on the opposite bank of the Sabarmati.

Under the Sabarmati Riverfront Development Corporation Ltd (SRFDCL), preparations are underway for the imminent commencement of its construction. Here's what you need to know about this upcoming marvel.

What are the key features?

This six-lane bridge-cum-barrage holds immense promise for commuters traveling from the western part of the city to the airport, as it will alleviate the need to take the longer Shahibaug-Dafnala Road route.

The proposed barrage, featuring a cutting-edge rubber dam technology, is designed to adapt to the river's fluctuating water levels. This flexible structure, spanning an impressive 30 meters in length and standing at a height of 2-2.5 meters, will establish a vital link between the electricity plant on the west bank and Camp Sadar Bazaar on the east bank.

With an estimated cost of Rs 250 crore, this bridge stands as a significant investment in the city's infrastructure. Beyond its architectural appeal, it holds practical benefits, including the capacity to store freshwater equivalent to Ahmedabad's needs for a duration of 15 days.
