Conflictorium or the Museum of Conflicts, set amidst the chaotic lanes of Mirzapur, Ahmedabad, appears like a charming building that exudes nostalgic charm.

Once the residence and boutique of Bachuben Nagarwala, renowned as the first hair stylist in the region, this historic building known as 'Gool Lodge' now serves as India's first-ever Conflictorium. Avni Sethi, the visionary behind this innovative museum, initially conceived it as a college project, and now, it is a space for thought and introspection.

A unique experiment initiating conversations

Unlike traditional museums brimming with artifacts, the Conflictorium offers an immersive experience that delves into the history of conflicts in Gujarat, encompassing religion, caste, gender, and creed.

However, it goes beyond mere documentation by exploring the repercussions of these conflicts and seeking potential solutions. Its aim is to create an "in-between space" or a "third space", which fosters conscious conversations about all forms of conflicts and violence, ultimately facilitating transcendence and peace.

The underlying belief is that harmony and unity are achievable if we confront the uncomfortable reality and sensitize ourselves to the suffering of others. Divided into several captivating sections, the museum features both permanent exhibits, and a gallery on the upper floor that hosts diverse art exhibitions, workshops, screenings, and events every few months.

Upon entering, you find yourself in the reception area, where you are introduced to the museum's concepts and themes. Here, you encounter the 'Conflict Timeline,' spanning from 1960 to 2012, unveiling the history of conflicts in Gujarat.

Moving forward, the 'Gallery of Disputes' employs jungle animal imagery to illustrate various forms of conflicts, such as gender inequality, income disparities, and caste divisions.

What truly enhances the experience is the inclusion of audio clips from films, interviews, and lectures, shedding light on the prevailing mindsets of people. The third room, aptly named "Empathy Valley," features silhouettes of influential national leaders. As you gaze upon the outlines of leaders like Gandhi, Sardar Patel, Jinnah, or Kalam, their audio speeches echo through the space.

Finally, the lower floor houses the "Moral Compass" room, containing a rare copy of the Indian constitution. At the center of the room, an artwork portrays Dr. Abdul Kalam overlooking the Constitution, symbolizing his enduring influence on our moral compass.

Through vivid imagery, thought-provoking art pieces, and an immersive environment, the Conflictorium evokes a profound experience that resonates with visitors, raising awareness of their own identities and place within these conflicts.

In the veranda, you encounter the "Memory Lab" art installation, comprising numerous pieces of paper bearing the intimate expressions of past visitors and artists. Additionally, the museum hosts weekly exhibitions, and the upstairs gallery boasts the "Sorry Tree," symbolizing the significance of self-reflection and the act of apologizing to oneself and others.

Powerful experience for visitors

Sethi and her team believe that only through community-based solutions, united efforts, and increased awareness can we hope to solve these age-old problems.

The conflictorium stands as a testament to the power of art, empathy, and dialogue in addressing conflicts and nurturing a society that embraces diversity and harmony. Its unconventional approach, combined with its profound impact, makes it an invaluable destination for those seeking a transformative and enlightening experience in Ahmedabad.
