Ahmedabad is a gateway to some of the most magnificent historical sites in India. One such gem is the Modhera Sun Temple, an architectural marvel that stands as a renowned remnant of the grandeur of a bygone era. Did you know that this temple is older than the Konark Sun Temple in Orissa?!

Oh yes, so if you're planning a day trip from Ahmedabad, the Modhera Sun Temple should be at the top of your list. Let's delve into what makes this site so special and how you can make the most of your visit.

Built in the early 11th century by King Bhim I

Built in 1026-27 CE during the reign of Bhima I of the Chaulukya dynasty, the Modhera Sun Temple is dedicated to the Hindu sun god, Surya. This temple is an exemplary piece of Maru-Gurjara architecture, renowned for its intricate carvings, grand design, and historic significance.

The temple is positioned in such a way that the first rays of the sun illuminate the deity in the sanctum, a testament to the advanced architectural skills of the time.

What to see at Modhera Sun Temple?

Surya Kund

The temple complex starts with the Surya Kund, a massive stepped tank that was used for ritual ablutions. The symmetrical steps and the small shrines around the kund add to its beauty and significance.

Sabha Mandap

The assembly hall or Sabha Mandap features 52 intricately carved pillars, each representing a week of the year. The carvings depict scenes from the Ramayana, Mahabharata, and other Hindu mythological stories.

Guda Mandap

The main sanctum or Guda Mandap is where the idol of Surya was once placed. Although the idol no longer exists, the sanctum remains an awe-inspiring sight with its stunningly detailed carvings.

New Additions

In October 2022, India's Prime Minister inaugurated a solar-powered 3-D Projection Mapping Show and Heritage Lighting at the temple. This unique experience adds another feather to the cap of this already well-known temple.
