Winter is the perfect time for a road trip from Ahmedabad to Kutch, and the route to Dholavira, known as the "Road to Heaven," is one of the most rewarding journeys you can take.

This trip combines stunning natural beauty with rich history, from the ancient ruins of Dholavira, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, to the vast, surreal expanse of the Rann of Kutch. Here’s everything you need to know about the ancient town of Dholavira and the surreal road that leads to it!

Dholavira, a UNESCO World Heritage Site

Dholavira is a UNESCO World Heritage Site located on Khadir Bet, a monsoon island within the vast Rann of Kutch. It is one of the five known sites of the Indus Valley Civilisation, renowned for its advanced urban planning and impressive water management systems.

The site boasts large reservoirs, intricate drainage systems, and expansive city structures, all of which highlight the remarkable engineering prowess of the Harappan civilisation. Walking through the ruins feels like stepping back in time to a thriving city that existed thousands of years ago.

You can also explore the Fossil Park near Dholavira, where fossilised wood and plants offer a fascinating glimpse into the region’s prehistoric past. Don’t miss the scenic Sunset Point, where you can witness the vast, shimmering expanse of the white Rann glowing as the sun sets, creating a truly mesmerizing sight.

The Road to Heaven: A scenic stretch through the Rann

Another highlight of the trip is the "Road to Heaven", a 30-kilometre stretch of the 278-kilometre-long national highway from Ghaduli to Santalpur, which cuts through the heart of the Great Rann of Kutch. This salt desert seems to stretch on endlessly, with the white salt plains extending as far as the eyes can see.

The surreal, dreamlike landscape makes for an unforgettable drive, particularly under the full moon when the salt plains shimmer, making it feel like you’re driving on another planet.

Knock Knock!

Winter is undoubtedly the best time to visit, as the cool weather makes the drive comfortable. If you visit during the Rann Utsav (November to February), the region comes alive with cultural performances, craft exhibitions, and local food stalls.

Even outside the festival season, the beauty of the Rann is unmatched, offering a peaceful and awe-inspiring atmosphere that will leave you with memories to cherish for a lifetime!
