Presented by DAG Gallery in collaboration with the Kasturbhai Lalbhai Museum, the exhibition is curated by Dr Giles Tillotson, Senior Vice President of Exhibitions at DAG. It highlights a unique fusion of Mughal and European artistic traditions, showcasing the rich cultural exchanges during the colonial era.
But what is a Company Painting?
You might be wondering, what exactly is a Company Painting? Well, it emerged during the early colonial period when Indian artists looked for new buyers among the workers of the British East India Company. These artists used European-made paper and transparent watercolour paints, which allowed them to develop new techniques and styles. A key focus of their work was natural history, particularly showcasing India’s plants and animals, especially birds.
The exhibition features beautiful paintings created between 1800 and 1835, commissioned by the East India Company. Each artwork reflects the skill of the artists and the cultural exchange between British patrons and Indian creators, resulting in a unique and important blend of artistic styles.
Colour your own bird!
Visitors can look forward to seeing a diverse array of bird species, from raptors and game birds to coastal waders and forest birds. While some species may be familiar, others are quite rare, offering a unique glimpse into India’s rich avifauna. The exhibition also features works from notable albums that showcase the meticulous observation and artistry of both known and unknown artists.
Additionally, you’ll have the chance to colour your own bird painting and take it home with you, making for a delightful and interactive experience. So, be sure to visit before it concludes!
