A peek into the heartbeat of the Walled City of Ahmedabad: The fascinating pols!

Zeal Jani

Isn't it surprising that just a hop, skip, and a jump away from the expansive SG Highway or CG Road, you stumble upon the Walled City of Ahmedabad, wrapped around the sprawling pols? These pols, or the narrow lanes of the Old City can whisk you away to the roots of this bustling metropolis.

Now, buckle up your walking shoes, because we're about to embark on a jaunt through these winding lanes. We'll uncover the reason behind their creation, and as we navigate, we'll witness how these alleys have evolved into the very heartbeat and soul of our vibrant city.

Once Upon a Time in the 15th Century

Cue dramatic music as we travel back to the 15th century when Ahmed Shah I decided to build a city that would make any history buff swoon. The city was strategically designed with a fortification wall surrounding the old quarter, and within this wall, the pols emerged as unique residential clusters. The term "pol" itself is derived from the Sanskrit word "pratoli," meaning entrance. The city's architecture was crafted to accommodate the growing population and promote a sense of community living.

Each pol used to be a self-contained microcosm with its own chowk (courtyard), well, temple, and often a common washing area. The houses, usually made of brick and wood, were adorned with intricate woodwork, jaali (lattice) windows, and vibrant frescoes.

The narrow lanes, designed to be confusing for potential invaders, are now an enchanting labyrinth for residents and visitors alike.

The identity of the Walled City

As centuries passed, the pols of Ahmedabad became inseparable from the city's identity. The unique architectural style, community bonds, and the rich tapestry of cultural practices within these neighborhoods turned them into cultural microcosms. Festivals, processions, and everyday life in the pols are a testament to the vibrant spirit of Ahmedabad's walled city.

As Ahmedabad evolves, so do the pols. Modernity knocks on their doors, and sometimes they answer with open arms. Conservation initiatives, guided tours, and community parties keep the pols relevant, ensuring that history and the present can coexist in a joyous dance.

So, there you have it – Ahmedabad's pols, the unsung heroes of the city's flamboyant history. As the walled city weaves its narrative into the present, the pols remain the heart of this cultural love affair!
