AMC to begin nighttime repairs on 37 city bridges

The Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) has announced plans to repair 37 bridges throughout the city, with work expected to commence within the next two weeks. To minimize daytime traffic disruptions, the repairs will be conducted at night.

This phase of the project will address railway underpasses, overbridges, minor bridges, and flyovers. Specific tasks include joint expansion, parapet walls, retaining walls, girders, and columns. The decision follows extensive surveys and inspections of 88 bridges by two agencies.

Naranpura Sports Complex nears completion

Half of the construction work on the sports complex in Naranpura, funded by the Central Government’s Khelo India grant for the 2036 Olympics, has been completed. Spanning approximately 83,507 square meters (20.39 acres), the complex is expected to be ready by October. The ₹584 crore project is divided into six sections.

The aquatic complex will feature an international standard diving pool with seating for 1,500 spectators. Additionally, the complex will include 2 basketball courts, 2 volleyball courts, and 8 badminton courts, designed for simultaneous use.

IMD forecasts heavy rain for Gujarat

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) predicts significant rainfall in Gujarat starting Monday. Northern and central districts are expected to experience heavy rain over the next two days, while Surat, Dang, Tapi, Navsari, Valsad, and coastal districts in Saurashtra may see heavy to very heavy rain at isolated locations.

Ahmedabad may receive light to moderate rain today. The city recently recorded a high of 37.4°C, one of the highest temperatures in the past 10 days, and a minimum temperature of 28°C, both above normal.

High fever cases surge by 31%

Ahmedabad has seen a 31% increase in high fever cases during the second week of July, attributed to initial monsoon rains and recent scattered showers. The city reported 156 cases from July 1 to 6 and 206 cases from July 7 to 12.

Health experts advise residents to avoid outside food and maintain hygiene to prevent further illnesses during the monsoon season.

Urban heat challenges in Ahmedabad

Ahmedabad is facing increased urban discomfort due to decreasing green spaces and expanding heat-trapping infrastructure. A recent study revealed that the city experiences 85 days of 'extreme caution' heat levels annually, the highest among 9 major Indian cities.

This combination of heat and humidity, known as the 'feels-like temperature,' is posing significant challenges for Ahmedabad and other metropolitan areas.
