From AMC's plan of getting a volunteer engagement platform to the fake World Cup tickets scams to the transformation of Odhav's waste plot into a green oasis and more. Stay updated with what's happening in the city with this Ahmedabad News Roundup.

AMC's volunteer engagement platform initiative

The AMC is set to hire a private agency to create a volunteer engagement app and website, allowing citizens to register for volunteering activities throughout the city. This platform will enable AMC officials to post their volunteer needs, and citizens can sign up to participate. Volunteers are expected to come from schools, colleges, universities, and other educational institutions. In recognition of their efforts, volunteers will receive certificates of acknowledgment and gifts upon completing tasks.

Nevertheless, some critics argue that this initiative is an attempt by the authorities to delegate their own responsibilities.

Beware of counterfeit World Cup tickets

Be cautious of fake match tickets! With the current World Cup fever, especially surrounding the India-Pakistan match, discussions about match tickets have become widespread on social media and through word of mouth. However, many of these advertisements have turned out to be deceptive, leading to complaints of tickets being sold at inflated prices, only for the seller to disappear or the tickets turning out to be fake after the payment.

Recently, the city police arrested a group involved in selling over 200 fake tickets. Hence, it is strongly advised to rely on official ticketing platforms and not trust any other private sources.

Security concerns in AMC-run city schools

Concerns over security persist in AMC-run schools. Out of the 459 schools under the management of the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC), 90 schools have yet to install CCTV cameras. The issue has gained prominence following the release of CCTV footage showing a girl being hit by a teacher at a school in Surat.

This raises concerns about how such incidents would come to light in schools under the AMC's jurisdiction. Over the past 13 years, 37 incidents of theft have occurred in these municipal corporation-run schools, resulting in the loss of goods worth Rs 15 lakh.

The transformation of Odhav's waste plot into a green oasis

An 8.5-hectare plot near the Municipal Garbage Collection Center in Odhav was previously used for waste disposal from the surrounding area. However, this site was allocated to the forest department for reforestation and development.

In 2019, the Forest Department initiated the creation of the Jadeshwar Cultural Forest on this former dump site. Today, this green forest stands as an exemplary model not only for the city but for the entire state of Gujarat.
