Ahmedabad's Kankaria Zoo, which is part of the Kamla Nehru Zoological Garden, was established way back in 1951 by zoologist Reuben David. What began as a recreational facility is today considered one of India's best zoos and a safe haven for the rarest species of mammals, birds and reptiles.
Stretching across an area of 31 acres, Ahmedabad's Kankaria zoo is home to over 450 mammal species, 2000 bird species and upwards of 140 reptiles. In this extensive list of animals at Ahmedabad zoo, you will also find rare species like the White Blackbuck, the Spotted Deer, Nicobar Pigeons and Indian Star Tortoise.
Apart from these, Ahmedabad zoo also boasts a number of wild animals like lions, tigers, elephants, albinos and exotic snakes like the deadly anaconda, which is one of the star attractions at the zoo. Over the decades, Kankaria zoo has also garnered praise for successful breeding of pythons, crocodiles and bear-cats, among other species.
With its rich diversity of animal, bird and reptilian species along with a slew of attractions such as toy train for kids, stone mural park and an amusement park, the Kankaria Zoo in Ahmedabad was voted the best in Asia in 1974.
Not resting on its laurels, Ahmedabad zoo has ever since continued to grow in stature with efforts in areas of wildlife conservation, education and research, as well.
So, if you're anywhere near Ahmedabad and have a few hours free to spend, make a beeline for the Kankaria Zoo and experience the intriguing world of nature in its unfettered glory.
