AMC streamlines street vending: Now, structured vegetable markets in each zone of Ahmedabad

A uniform design for vegetable markets has been confirmed by the AMC for implementation in each zone.

In a bid to bring about organized and traffic-free marketplaces, the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) has given the green light to establish two dedicated vegetable markets in each zone of the city.

These markets will aim to provide better amenities and improved facilities for vendors and customers alike. The locations for these markets have been strategically chosen, with plots already designated for neighborhood centers or civic amenities, making the relocation process smoother and more convenient.

Enhanced amenities and structured local commerce

Street vending locations in Ahmedabad have often been disorganized, causing inconvenience and traffic issues. To address this, the 2023-24 budget of AMC included a proposal to set up two vegetable markets in each zone.

The designs for these markets have already been finalized, featuring platforms with storage space underneath, roofed structures to protect vendors and customers, and ample space for parking, toilets, and electricity.

Most zones have identified suitable plots for these markets, while some are still in the selection process. For instance, the South West zone has chosen plots near TV9 and behind Third Eye Blessing Society, though the relocation of the entire Lotus School market poses a challenge, necessitating vendor regulation in its current location.

Zone-wise selection of vegetable market locations

In the Central zone, two markets near Meghaninagar police station, Asarwa, and Prabhunagar in Asarwa market are being considered for transformation, but limited space remains a concern. In the North West zone, a plot on Vandemataram road, Chandlodia, has been selected, with discussions on for a second location near ICB Flora in Gota. Ensuring vendor compliance will be vital for the success of these markets, as vendors must sell their produce only in the allotted plots.

The East zone has chosen three market locations, including Vimal vegetable market in Odhav, one near Hatkeshwar bus terminus, and another opposite Atal apartment in Nikol. The North zone is still in the process of selecting suitable plots. In the South zone, Puja firm near Aslali and another location near the lake of Vatva gam have been chosen. Finally, the West zone has selected plots near Motera gam and Suna crossroads in Chandkheda.

With these initiatives, the AMC aims to streamline street vending, enhance the overall market experience, and support the thriving commerce in Ahmedabad.
