Explore the roots of Guj’s Abla Embroidery, a centuries-old craft thriving in Ahmedabad markets

A craft brought to India in the 17th century.

Zeal Jani

While shopping for Navratri and Diwali in the markets of Ahmedabad, you must have come across the stunning colourful mirror work in chaniya cholis, kurtis, jackets and various decorative items. This exquisite craft, known as "Aabhla Bharat Kaam" or "Abla Embroidery", vividly reflects Gujarat's rich artistic heritage and cultural diversity.

The history: Brought to India in the 17th century

Aabhla Bharat Kaam traces its origins back to the 17th century during the Mughal period when artisans introduced this form of Iran's embroidery style to India. The term "Sheesha," meaning mirror in Persian, underscores the craft's evolution from its initial use of mica to the adoption of small pieces of blown glass. This transformation not only enhanced the aesthetic appeal of the work but also made it more accessible to artisans, allowing for intricate designs that reflect light and bring vibrancy to textiles.

In Gujarat, shisha work often depicts traditional themes, such as tragic love stories, battles, heroes, and kings. Embroiderers in Kutch and Kathiawar are particularly renowned for their shisha embroidery. Kutchi embroidery is distinguished by the predominance of chain stitches in curved or circular designs, while shisha work in Kathiawar features long satin stitches arranged in square or triangular motifs.

This regional variation contributes to the rich tapestry of styles found within Aabhla Bharat Kaam, further enhancing its cultural significance.
