While Phoolon ki Holi, the spirited Lathmar Holi of UP, Basant Utsav of West Bengal, and the majestic Holi celebrations of Rajasthan are well-known, today, let's journey into the heart of Gujarat's largest tribal community and explore their captivating Holi and Spring festivities!
Welcome to the Kavant fair, or Kavant Gher Mela, held in the rustic charm of Kavant village near Chhota Udepur. Here, amidst the lush surroundings, the Adivasi Rathwa community comes together for a vibrant cultural gathering.
Imagine the scene: On the third day after Holi, the Kavant fair unfolds like a dazzling mosaic of tradition and jubilation. Tribal men and women, adorned in their traditional finery and intricate body paintings, move to the beat of tribal tunes, creating an atmosphere brimming with energy and excitement.
The otherwise tranquil village of Kavant bursts into life on the day of the festival as men and women of the Rathwa community fill the streets, adorned in their vibrant tribal attire and distinctive silver jewelry. The fair signifies the culmination of the harvest season, the Holi festival, and primarily, the unity of the community from various regions.
One of the most captivating sights is the painted faces adorned with white lines and dots, accompanied by rope belts with large bells around their waists, and tall conical hats adorned with a plethora of peacock feathers and colorful garlands.
Once the community gathers, the air fills with music and dance. They move to the rhythmic beats of bells, drums, and flutes, in a trance-like state. This entire spectacle provides ample opportunities for photographers and is a cultural delight for enthusiasts. Visitors can wander through the village streets, join in the dance, and immerse themselves in the festivities until sunset.
So, embark on a journey, approximately 200 km from Ahmedabad or 100 km from Vadodara, and make your post-Holi plans an enriching exploration of Gujarat's cultural heritage.
