We've come across many splendid houses adorned with pieces of art, but nestled in Ahmedabad is a home that embodies art itself. Allow us to introduce you to the awe-inspiring dwelling of Amit Ambalal. This house stands as a living testament to the fusion of traditional Gujarati architecture, the exquisite collection of pichvai art from the Nathdwara tradition, and the architectural influences of Madhya Pradesh.
In this captivating haven, artist, scholar, and art aficionado Amit Ambalal now resides with his wife and two sons. The home itself is a grand fusion of time-honored heritage and contemporary brilliance, a seamless blend of aesthetics and the heartwarming embrace of tranquility. Nature dances in harmony with art within these walls.
It was visualized by the ingenious mind of French-American architect Bernard Kohn. The home was a vision brought to life at the request of Amit bhai's father, Ambalal Himatlal. Named "Sumeru," an ode to the wondrous Meru, a sacred mountain from mythology, this home is a living embodiment of an art-filled sanctuary. It's a sanctuary where art breathes and culture echoes through the ages, all while offering a haven of tranquility.
Inside, a captivating courtyard, lush gardens, and a vibrant "chowk" invite you to uncover their secrets. The heart of the house, the main hall, unfolds like a treasure trove of art. A majestic 19th-century wooden Garuda from the southern realms graces the space, just a hint of the visual splendor that awaits. The interior architecture pays homage to the illustrious collection of pichvais and paintings from Nathdwara, a true testament to their unrivaled excellence on a national scale.
In this abode, every corner is an invitation to explore, a celebration of artistry and cultural heritage that beckons you to embark on a journey of wonder and discovery. Amit bhai has a studio where he continues to work his magic. While the house may appear like a museum, Amit bhai shares how it is more than that ,"It’s not a museum. There is an eclecticism in these artworks and a touch of magic in how they are arranged alongside each other."
