“Freedom Park is a temple and if bulawa nahi aata mere dogs ka, you can’t come!” This is the warmth and love with which Maya Parekh, co-founder of Freedom Park near Ahmedabad, describes this unique sanctuary. It’s a shelter home dedicated to specially-abled stray dogs in need of care.
This International Dog Day, why not answer that call? Visit and volunteer at Freedom Park to connect with the incredible dogs that call it home and learn more about the mission that’s given these furry babies a second chance at life!
The journey of Freedom Park began in March 2022. Ramesh Sinha and Maya Parekh, the founders, were driven by a simple yet powerful mission: to create a shelter home for stray dogs that are visually challenged, amputees, or paraplegic and can't survive on the streets. Over the years, their initiative has grown, and today, Freedom Park is home to 33 such dogs, providing them with a safe and loving environment.
What makes Freedom Park truly special is its philosophy. The dogs here are not kept in cages or tied with leashes. Instead, they roam freely, even stepping outside the premises whenever they wish, only to return for food and rest. It’s a place where dogs can heal, play, and live in a community, free and happy.
Visiting Freedom Park is an experience that stays with you long after you’ve left. The park itself is a peaceful, green oasis, where dogs run freely, tails wagging in joy. There’s a 300-meter canal filled with 30,000 fish, where visitors can float and take in the serenity while the dogs frolic nearby. The atmosphere is one of pure, unfiltered happiness—a rare thing in a world where stray dogs often face so much hardship.
The care these dogs receive is nothing short of remarkable. Regular vet check-ups, vaccinations, and deworming are just the beginning. A live kitchen ensures they’re fed nutritious, home-cooked meals, and aqua therapy helps those with physical challenges. The volunteers, including a devoted couple who live at the park, are always there, ensuring that each dog feels safe, loved, and never alone.
This International Dog Day, consider spending a day at Freedom Park. The dogs here have overcome challenges most of us can’t even imagine, yet they greet every day with wagging tails and hopeful eyes.
Your visit will bring them joy, and the experience will leave a lasting impact on your heart. If you can’t make it in person, consider making a donation—every bit helps in giving these deserving dogs the love and care they need!
