Karma Cafe: A quiet corner in Ahmedabad echoing Gandhian simplicity and philosophy

Zeal Jani

In search of a peaceful spot? Check out Karma Cafe—it's not your typical cafe, more like a quiet retreat with a touch of Gandhian simplicity and warmth. Started by the Navajivan Trust to introduce the city's youth to Gandhi and their mission, it's now a cherished spot for reading, working, and meetings among Amdavadis.

Experience the heartwarming essence of Gandhian philosophy in both the atmosphere and the wholesome food they offer. And yes, don't miss the Svatva store and Satya Art Gallery next door!

A place to quiet down

Unlike trendy places with music and a vast menu, Karma Cafe keeps it simple with a quiet and unpretentious atmosphere. People engage in conversations, read, or simply enjoy their own company. Stay as long as you like, order a snack, or relish a hearty, healthy meal.

And be sure to explore the Satya Art Gallery showcasing photographs, paintings, and artworks. Next to it, the Svatva store offers cotton, khadi, and silk apparel, connecting history with modern simplicity.

Discover an old printing machine from Navjeevan Publication, Gandhi's initiative. The setting embodies Gandhian philosophy, presented in a modern and practical style.

Enjoy their famous Gandhi Thali and live bhajans

On weekends, the cafe transforms into a Gandhian paradise with the special Gandhi Thali. Picture a plate filled with dishes like Kadi Khichdi, Lasan Ni Chatni, Bhakhri, Thepla, and more—a true celebration of flavors cherished by the Gujarati community.

From Friday to Sunday Karma Cafe opens its doors to special guests—jail inmates from Sabarmati jail. They bring the cafe alive with soulful bhajans, as a part of their rehabilitation program. The atmosphere during these days is pure and uplifting, adding a meaningful touch to your visit.

Live Bhajan timings: 7 PM to 8 PM (Friday to Sunday)

Cafe Timing: 11 AM to 10 PM

Location: Navjivan Trust, Behind Gujarat Vidyapith, Ashram Road, Ahmedabad
