Situated in Bauva ni Pol within Ahmedabad's historic walled city, Khadia Municipal School, Number 14, is more than just another school—it's a living piece of history. Established in 1889, this institution has witnessed over 135 years of change, making it the oldest school in Ahmedabad.

In the 2022-23 academic year, the school embraced modernity by transforming into an Anupam Shala, or smart school, equipping students with smart boards and laptops for a contemporary learning experience. As it continues to serve the local community while adapting to modern educational demands, let’s delve into the rich history that makes Khadia Municipal School a unique and enduring landmark in Ahmedabad.

Grade II heritage building, constructed in 1917

The current building, constructed in 1917 and named Nanabhai Rajaram Bhatt Municipal School, has been classified as a Grade II heritage building by the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation’s Heritage Cell. Despite its age, the building's structure remains largely intact, although recent upgrades have included replacing the original wooden stairs with metal ones.

"Without records and structural changes, it is difficult to pinpoint the oldest school in Ahmedabad city and whether and where they continue to exist. ," notes Ashish Trambadia from the AMC Heritage Department. "However, the oldest ones started in the pols of Ahmedabad and subsequently taken over by the Municipal school board after government education started post-1940s full-fledged."

Converted into Anupam Shala aka "Smart School" today

The school is situated on a narrow lane near Raipur Chakla Library, surrounded by residential buildings on three sides and a few shops across the way. It serves students from nearby areas, including Afzal Khan Tekra, Bhavaanpura ni Pith, Raghunath ni Pith, and Jethabhai ni Pol.

Over its long history, Khadia Municipal School has seen several changes. Originally a boys-only school, it was first known as Khadia Municipal School Number 1 before being renumbered to 7 and eventually 14. The school has gradually expanded its classes from the initial few grades to now offering education from Balwatika (kindergarten) through Class 8.

In recent years, the school has made efforts to modernise. In the 2022-23 academic year, it was converted into an Anupam Shala, or smart school, where students now have access to smart boards and laptops as part of their learning experience.

Today, Khadia Municipal School remains a functioning educational institution that continues to serve its community while preserving its historical roots.
