As we celebrate Independence Day and reflect on the countless sacrifices that paved the way for our nation’s freedom, there’s a unique and poignant story from the heart of Ahmedabad that often goes unnoticed. Amidst the grand tales of heroism, this small yet deeply moving story stands out, touching hearts in its own special way.
In the narrow lanes of Dhal ni Pol in Ahmedabad’s Astodia area, there stands a humble monument known as "Chakli ni Khambhi". It’s not a towering statue or a grand memorial, but a small, delicate tribute to a sparrow—a sparrow that met a tragic end during the Nav Nirman movement of 1974, a period of intense civil unrest in Gujarat.
The Nav Nirman movement began as a student-led protest but quickly engulfed the entire state. On March 2, 1974, a particularly intense confrontation occurred in Ahmedabad. The police, in their effort to control the crowd, opened fire.
Amidst the chaos and violence, an innocent sparrow was struck down by a stray bullet. While the incident might seem minor in the broader context, it resonated deeply with the people of Dhal ni Pol, who were so moved that they performed a cremation pilgrimage for the sparrow across the entire Astodia area.
Today, if you wander through this pol, you’ll find a white marble monument dedicated to that sparrow.
The monument stands as a reminder of the innocent lives that are often lost in the pursuit of justice and freedom—lives that may not be human but are nonetheless valuable.
It’s a testament to the empathy and compassion of the residents of Dhal ni Pol, who, in the midst of their own struggles, paused to mourn a small, silent victim of the movement!
