Sardar Patel Bhavan, a prominent landmark in Ahmedabad, stands as a testament to the rich political history of the city. Located between Ellisbridge and Astodia in old Ahmedabad, this ochre-colored multi-arched building has played a pivotal role in the governance and administration of the city, serving as the nerve center until 2010.
Constructed in 1885, the structure was initially named the 'Ripon Building.' Crafted primarily from limestone, its architecture is distinguished by an impressive facade adorned with arches and pillars. Over the years, Sardar Patel Bhavan has become synonymous with the Iron Man of India, Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, and has historical connections with other influential figures like Narottam Zaveri and Daman Patel.
The inception of the Ahmedabad Municipality dates back to 1885, when Ranchhodlal Chhotalal was appointed as its first president by the British Government. The first elected president, Rao Bahadur Bhaishankar Nanabhai, paved the way for Vallabhbhai Patel, popularly known as Sardar Patel, who later became the third president.
In 1950, the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation was established, ushering in a new era. The designation of the president was replaced by that of the Mayor, and the administrative building of the corporation was aptly renamed 'Sardar Patel Bhavan.' The central hall of the Municipal Corporation earned the name 'Gandhi Hall.'
As of now, the Heritage Department of the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation and the Ahmedabad World Heritage City Trust are headquartered in Sardar Patel Bhavan, further solidifying its significance in preserving and promoting the cultural and historical heritage of the city. The building stands as a living testament to the political evolution of Ahmedabad and the enduring legacy of leaders like Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel who once governed the city from within its walls.
