Pick a book, share a book| Know about Ahmedabad's FIRST free Library Box

Here's how you too can participate in the initiative!

If you’re taking a leisurely stroll through Ahmedabad's Parimal Garden and stumble upon an unlocked library box, don't be surprised! This commendable initiative by Your Reading Circle is something you’ll want to be part of.

Imagine a box library, or a public bookshelf, where you can exchange one book for another, fostering a shared space for the community to swap stories and culture. Intrigued? So were we! We chatted with the founders to learn more about this innovative concept. And here's what we learned!

Inspiration from Kerala’s village of books

Om Thakkar and Heet Doshi launching the library

Om Thakkar and Heet Doshi, the driving forces behind Your Reading Circle (a book club and community), drew inspiration from Kerala’s Perumkulam village. Heet recalled, "I came across a reel showcasing how this small village has over 15 to 20 small libraries. These little boxes in public spaces encourage people to pick up a book and read." Inspired by this thriving reading culture, Om and Heet envisioned a similar project for Ahmedabad.

Determined to cultivate a vibrant reading culture in Ahmedabad, Om and Heet installed the first open and free-for-all box library near the amphitheater in Parimal Garden, on June 23.

Stocked with 20 books, this small library has since captured the attention of curious readers and passersby. "We wanted to create a space where anyone could enjoy the pleasure of reading without any barriers," said Om.

How it works

The concept is simple and accessible: if you have books to share, head over to Parimal Garden and place them in the box. You’re welcome to take a book home in return.

Even those without books to donate can borrow from the collection, ensuring everyone has the opportunity to participate. The aim is to keep this community-driven chain of sharing and reading alive and growing.

Knock Knock!

So next time you find yourself in Parimal Garden, take a moment to visit Ahmedabad's first free Library. You might discover a new favourite book, contribute to a fellow reader’s joy, and become part of a beautiful community tradition!
