Project Otenga in Ahmedabad: Where creativity and a thriving community meets North Eastern cuisine!

At the heart of this experimental cafe is the mission to foster a mindful community through taste and design.

Zeal Jani

Ahmedabad is witnessing a cultural shift with cafes sprouting within college campuses. In this wave of experimentation, one extraordinary gem shines bright - Project Otenga at Ahmedabad University. This vibrant space isn't just a cafe; it's a thriving community hub and a hotspot for the city's young crowd.

Established by Kabyashree Borgohain from Assam and Yumlembah Dayananda Meiti from Manipur, Project Otenga combines a cozy atmosphere with unique design and serves some of the most authentic North Indian cuisine. It's not just a place to eat; it's a buzzing center for various activities and endless creativity!

The inspiration behind the Cafe

Project Otenga derives its name from the Ou Tenga, also known as the elephant apple—a key ingredient in Assamese sour dishes called "tenga." What makes Ou Tenga unique is how its petals intertwine and grow stronger instead of falling off, eventually forming the fruit. This exceptional characteristic serves as a metaphor for Project Otenga's unique and multi-faceted approach.

The founders, hailing from the North East, envisioned creating a space where visitors could immerse themselves in the cuisine from North East and the philosophy of slow design. They also aimed to foster multidisciplinary collaboration, propagate mindfulness, and collective learning.

The cafe plays host to a variety of events, from book readings and workshops to music and dance performances, as well as insightful talks. For the latest updates and event schedules, simply check out their Instagram page.

A Culinary journey through North East India

This self-service cafe is a haven for lovers of North Eastern cuisine. The menu boasts intriguing dishes like 'Under the Umbrella' and 'Peaceful Romance' sandwiches, and small bites like 'Soulmate' and 'Cheesy Surprise.' You can also savor Assamese-style dishes like Veg Mini Meal, Mouthful Whisper, Vap Diya Narikol Pitha, and Xando, among others. Each dish is a delectable journey filled with the authentic flavors of the North Eastern cuisine.

In the future, they plan to introduce a product range showcasing traditional indigenous products from the North East, allowing you to take home a piece of this rich culture.

Aesthetic and tranquil ambiance

Founded by design experts, Project Otenga's interiors and exteriors are a visual treat. The cafe's design is minimal yet appealing. A tree grows right through the roof, standing gracefully in the heart of the cafe. French windows and greenery create a peaceful atmosphere. Whether you're looking to work quietly or engage in lively conversations with friends, Project Otenga provides good space to unwind.

So, if you're seeking a delightful blend of North East Indian flavors, creative inspiration, and a sense of community, make your way to Project Otenga. This is more than just a cafe; it's a cultural experience waiting to be explored!
