Step into History: Commemorate Independence Day by visiting Freedom Heritage Sites of Ahmedabad

A special Independence day itinerary through the lanes of Ahmedabad!

Zeal Jani

As we commemorate the 76th Independence Day, let's not forget that our cherished heritage city, Ahmedabad, holds a vital chapter in the saga of our nation's freedom. From the stalwarts like Gandhi to the visionary Patel, our city stood witness to their tireless efforts and dedication to our country's cause.

These narratives of history, resistance, courage, and devotion are etched into the very fabric of the places that bore witness to them. Thus, we present to you a curated list of sites in Ahmedabad that resonate with the echoes of India's freedom struggle.

Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel Memorial

Unveiled to the public in 1980, the Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel National Memorial stands on the foundations of the Moti Shahi Mahal, a creation of Shah Jahan. Within these walls, the legacy of Sardar Patel, India's 'Iron Man,' is meticulously preserved.

This museum and exhibition center houses an impressive array of artifacts that chronicle his life's various facets. The immersive experience offered by the multimedia halls paints a vivid picture of Sardar Vallabhbhai's journey, from his early days to his pivotal role in shaping a united and independent India.

Sabarmati Ashram

Undoubtedly a cornerstone of India's freedom movement, the Sabarmati Ashram, initially known as Satyagraha Ashram and later renamed Harijan Ashram by Mahatma Gandhi, exudes historical significance. Gandhi's residence from 1917 to 1930, this sacred space was the epicenter of farmer uprisings against the oppressive British regime.

The ashram complex comprises Hriday Kunj, Vinobha Kutir, Upasana Mandir, and Gandhi Sangrahalaya, each housing fragments of his impactful life. The Dandi March of 1930, a watershed moment in India's struggle for freedom, commenced from this very spot.

Gujarat Vidyapith

In the pursuit of an independent India, Mahatma Gandhi founded Gujarat Vidyapith. This educational institution, conceived as an alternative to the British-designed system, aimed to cultivate Indian minds outside colonial influences. With the core ideals of self-reliance and 'Hind Swaraj,' Gandhi envisioned a future where education and empowerment intertwined, paving the path for a self-sufficient India.

Kochrab Ashram

Echoes of Gandhi's ideals resound within the walls of Kochrab Ashram, the first ashram established to champion causes like upliftment of the marginalized, public education, sanitation, and the bedrock principles of Swaraj, Swadeshi, and Satyagraha.

A gift from barrister Jivanlal Desai, this ashram emerged as a haven for those dedicated to Gandhian philosophies. Here, individuals fervently practiced satyagraha, supported self-sufficiency, and fought for social upliftment and equality, in accordance with the principles of human unity.

Gujarat College

The sprawling campus of Gujarat College bears witness to a dynamic history interwoven with the freedom movement. Inspirited by the likes of Mahatma Gandhi, Sardar Patel, and Subhash Chandra Bose, the college became a hotbed of resistance against British rule. Students, buoyed by patriotism, actively participated in the 1921 Congress Meet and heeded the call for civil disobedience.

The enduring legacy of their fervor is etched in the student-led political strike of 1928, a demand for the recall of the Simon Commission. The college's hallowed grounds also witnessed the tragic sacrifice of Vinod Kinariwala, who laid down his life for hoisting the Indian flag on August 9, 1942.
