Jatin Shewaramani

Indian Institute of Management Ahmedabad, which was established back in the year 1962 is one of the oldest and the most prestigious B schools of India. Known for its excellence in management education the varsity has remained a trailblazer for years. Not only IIM Ahmedabad has a distinguished faculty, top-notch infrastructure and cutting-edge research programs but the institute has also garnered recognition and has secured multiple accolades as the leading institution in management education globally and in India.

Here, we delve into 5 fascinating facts about IIM Ahmedabad that showcase its exceptional qualities:

One of the most prestigious B schools of India

Did you know that the campus of IIM Ahmedabad covers a whopping 106 acres of land, making it one of the largest business school campuses in India (that's like having your own little town right on campus)?

But that's not all, IIM Ahmedabad also holds the prestigious title of being the only IIM to receive the coveted accreditation from the European Quality Improvement System (EQUIS) in 2008.

The logo draws inspiration from traditional art

The iconic logo of IIM Ahmedabad holds a unique history - it is derived from the intricate Embrasure grill design at the Sidi Sayyed Mosque in Ahmedabad, India. The designer ingeniously adapted the blooming tree motif of the grill into IIM-A's logo, seamlessly blending the institution's modern identity with a nod to its cultural roots of the city.

IIM Ahmedabad's annual philanthropic events: Giving back to society

The prestigious varsity also has a student-run Social Responsibility Cell that collaborates with NGOs and charitable organizations to organize an annual charity event called The Joy of Giving Week. This event aims to promote philanthropy and give back to society by encouraging the student community to engage in charitable activities.

Additionally, the campus of IIM Ahmedabad is generally closed to the general public, except during two events - the Campus Walk during the Joy of Giving Week and the marketing fest Insight. The Campus Walk is an opportunity for the general public to visit the campus and participate in various activities organized by the students.

IIM Ahmedabad owes its existence to Dr. Vikram Sarabhai

Alongside laying the foundation of the Indian Space Research Organisation, visionary scientist Dr. Vikram Sarabhai also played a pivotal role in establishing IIM Ahmedabad. He lobbied for the institute to be set up in Ahmedabad, and secured support from local industrialists and government officials. Sarabhai's vision and leadership were critical in creating one of the most prestigious management education institutions in India.

Thus, the library of the campus is also named after Dr. Vikram Sarabhai as a tribute to his contributions.

The iconic architecture of Louis Kahn at IIM Ahmedabad

IIM Ahmedabad campus is home to 14 dormitories that were designed by the celebrated American architect, Louis Kahn, in the 1960s.

Renowned scientist Dr. Vikram Sarabhai, who had invited Kahn to design several buildings in Ahmedabad, enlisted his services to create the iconic structures of IIM Ahmedabad. The dormitories are characterized by their simple, geometric forms and innovative use of natural light, which create a serene and conducive learning environment for students.
