Wholesome dining at Kamala Cafe in Ahmedabad: Cultivating empowerment through healthy cuisine

Zeal Jani

Among the cafes of Ahmedabad, Kamala Cafe stands out as a beacon of innovation and social progress. Unlike the run-of-the-mill places, this cafe doesn't rely on enclosed, air-conditioned spaces or boast an extensive and extravagant menu to attract Amdavadis.

Instead, it offers a unique experience where nature, fresh produce, and women empowerment take center stage. Nestled within its open and green premises is a vision that combines sustainability with delectable, simple offerings.

A noble initiative

Dr. Kamla Chaudhary, the visionary behind Kamala Cafe, generously donated the land for this pioneering initiative. The mission was to create a space where self-employed women could not only earn a livelihood but also realize their full potential and leadership. The women of Self Employed Women's Association (SEWA) plays a crucial role in managing this cafe, turning it into a thriving hub of empowerment.

Beyond empowering women, Kamala Cafe is dedicated to promoting healthy eating. Here, you won't find dishes loaded with potatoes and refined flour. Instead, its commitment to whole grains shines through, with a focus on highly nutritious, locally cultivated millets such as ragi, jowar, and bajri.

This inspiring concept, initially established in five districts of Gujarat, is now poised to go national.

Nutrient-packed food options

What sets Kamala Cafe apart is its commitment to its fundamental principles - sourcing enriching ingredients from women producers and minimizing the use of oil. Visitors flock here primarily to explore new and traditional Gujarati dishes prepared in the authentic way. Every item on the menu features ingredients rooted in marginalized crops that have sustained human civilization for ages, including Bajri, Jowar, and Jav.

The cafe places a strong emphasis on nutritional value over variety and appearance. The setting at Kamala Cafe is charming in its simplicity. Cotton tablecloths adorn wooden tables, and a fixed menu is offered for breakfast, lunch, evening snacks, and dinner. The use of simple brass crockery adds to the rustic charm. The dining area includes a small bamboo shade on one side, leading to a veranda and garden replete with a variety of plants and crops.

In essence, Kamala Cafe is not just a place to savor wholesome, traditional dishes but also a symbol of empowerment, sustainability, and a brighter future for women in India.
