In a bid to promote eco-friendly Ganesh Chaturthi celebrations this year, the state of Goa has enforced a law against the use of PoP idols. The Environment Minister in a statement to the media, elaborated upon the hazardous nature of the material and informed that it does not disintegrate, it becomes a major environmental nuisance rather.

The PoP idols boast of better cost-effectiveness and finishing, over traditional clay and thus, continue to be in demand in Goa, despite a ban here. However, it is toxic to the environment due to the presence of gypsum, sulphur, phosphorus and magnesium composition.

These idols also use lead paints which disintegrate slowly and poison the water in lakes, ponds, rivers. The hazardous material often chokes beds of water bodies where the idols are immersed during visarjan.

"This time strict implementation will be done and PoP idols will be banned for sale or even people who buy such idols will have a tough time, including paying fines or imprisonment if required," said the Minister. Ganesh Chaturthi is celebrated with much enthusiasm in Goa and this year, the 10-day festivities will begin on September 10.
