Nestled in the arms of some beautiful white sand beaches, Fort Tiracol cannot be missed when you visit Goa. For those of you who are done with the party scenes here and want a few days just to sit back, relax and read a book, this is where you ought to be. Built in the Portuguese era, near the village of Tiracol in the Pernem sub-division of Goa, Fort Tiracol resides on the Northernmost tip of the state. It also encloses a century-old church called Igreja de Santo Antônio and it can be easily reached by a ferry from Querim, 42 km north of Panjim.

Fort Tiracol is believed to have been built originally by Khem Sawant Bhosle, the Raja of Sawantwadi, in the 17th century. In 1746, the Portuguese lead by the 44th Viceroy of Goa, Pedro Miguel de Almeida waged war against the Raja of Sawantwadi. After several encounters on land as well on water, on 23rd November 1746, the fort was surrendered and it came under the Portuguese.

The Fort then became an essential part of the Portuguese maritime defences after an extensive revamping in 1764. It remained under Portuguese control till December 1961, after which the territories under Portuguese control were forcibly annexed by India.

The Church of St. Anthony of Lisbon was earlier constructed as a Chapel for the Holy Trinity by de Almeida, after the fort's capture. The church is generally not open for the public except on its annual feast, which is usually held in May. As the Church is right at the center of the fort, it makes for a beautiful locale if you are looking to get married in an outdoor place facing the sea.
