After taking up the task of improving the air quality of the city, Indore Municipal Corporation (IMC) has now initiated a project to increase the groundwater level. With summers already impacting the environment, efforts for deepening the water bodies in the city will be a crucial step. The project would include the construction of boundary walls around the water bodies and installing water harvesting systems in parks and private & public buildings.

Considering its near-universal availability, dependability and low capital cost, groundwater is the most preferred source of water in various user sectors in the state. The increasing dependence on groundwater as a reliable source of water has resulted in indiscriminate extraction in various regions without any effort to deal with the recharging capacities of aquifers and other environmental factors.
IMC Commissioner Pratibha Pal headed a review meet where she instructed city planner Vishnu Khare to come up with a plan and a Detailed Project Report (DPR) for increasing underground water in Indore. As per reports, execution will begin soon after the DPR is prepared and approved. Instructions to run a campaign involving public and govt bodies were also released by the authorities. The campaign will help spread awareness about groundwater and water conservation, helping citizens take necessary measures to save water.

As per the instructions from the commissioner, concerned officials will conduct several surveys for tasks like pond deepening, and construction of wells. A survey will also be conducted to install a 100% water harvesting system that will connect at least five wards in the city.
IMC has been taking numerous measures to conserve the environment and make the city’s infrastructure more sustainable and eco-friendly. These measures include the setting up of Ahilya Vans or city forests to improve air quality, resulting in increased precipitation and efficient trash and sewage management to avoid contamination of the water bodies.
