The Indian Institute of Technology is all set to go global with a campus overseas. The first IIT campus outside India will come up in Zanzibar, Tanzania. The Memorandum of Understanding to set up an IIT Madras campus in Tanzania has already been signed on EAM S Jaishankar's four-day visit to the country.
It is noteworthy that all the academic programmes, student selection and other such aspects in the new campus will be overseen by IIT Madras. The capital and operational expenses, on the other hand, will be given by the government of Zanzibar-Tanzania.
Furthermore, all students enrolled in the Zanzibar campus will be awarded standard IIT Madras degrees once their programme is completed. Plans are underway to launch joint programmes, including exchange schemes by the new campus in October 2023.
In addition to that, the new campus is sure to enhance the academic caliber of IIT Madras with a diverse student and teacher base. The longstanding camaraderie between India and Tanzania is also reflected in this huge academic collaboration.
