Independence Day 2023: 'Meri Maati, Mera Desh' campaign to pay homage to freedom fighters & heroes

The campaign will comprise various activities across the country at national, state, panchayat/village, block, and urban local body levels.

Indians will be partaking in glorious Independence Day celebrations, commemorating the day the country's freedom struggle culminated after two centuries of British Raj. August 15, 1947, resulted in the birth of an independent sovereign nation by ending the colonial rule.

Under the initiative of 'Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav', the government has kicked off a special 'Meri Maati, Mera Desh' campaign that has commenced from today (August 9). It not only aims to pay homage to the brave heroes who sacrificed their lives for the hard-earned independence but also celebrate the rich historical narratives of the nation.

Meri Maati, Mera Desh: A tribute to the 'Veers' and ‘Veeranganas’

It is a "tribute to the 'Veers' and ‘Veeranganas’ who have made the supreme sacrifice for the country," says the idea behind the efforts. The campaign will comprise various activities and ceremonies across the country at national, state, panchayat/village, block and urban local body levels.

For instance, 'Shilaphalakams' will be built within villages, panchayats and urban sites (near Amrit Sarovars or local schools), which will have names of the bravehearts (freedom fighters, defense personnel, Central Armed Police Forces and State Police personnel) inscribed on them. Moreover, felicitation ceremonies will also be held to honour the deceased heroes and their families.

Under Vasudha Vandhan, among many other initiatives, these bodies will plant 75 saplings of indigenous species to celebrate 75 years on Independence.

"During the ceremony, people are encouraged to either individually or collectively take a selfie while taking the pledge with soil or mitti ka diya in the hand and upload it to the dedicated website." One can also join by taking a pledge, sharing photos and viewing more events here.
