Indore Municipal Corporation (IMC), is planning to increase the city's green cover. The decision has been taken considering the city's low green cover, which is currently at 9.5%. To address this issue, the IMC has set a target to increase the green cover by 18% in the next four years.
To this end, the IMC plans to plant atleast 1 Lakh saplings each monsoon season for the next four years. In addition to that, the authorities have also planned to collaborate with various organizations to get a help in achieving the set target. The plantation will likely happen on "Haryali Mahotsav" on Sunday.
Even though IMC has taken such an initiative before. this time it will not only focus on planting the saplings, but will also focus on their survival. The authorities have emphasized on taking two approaches, planting trees and removing the encroachments from green belts.
Further, to make the plantation drive successful, the mayor urged people to challenge their friends and relatives to plant five saplings each. This will contribute to environmental protection.
In another positive development in the city, IMC is set to earn carbon credits worth Rs 20 crore annually with a 60 MW solar power plant to be established in Khargone district.
This solar plant will not only reduce the city's electricity bill but also help earn from carbon credits.Furthermore, IMC is offering treated water for purchase through their 311 app. Currently, they are supplying one lakh liters of water each to two companies involved in the metro rail project in the city.
