Around 600 homes in the city have been converting wet waste into compost and selling dry waste for a long time now. According to a report, the area selected for the ward in Indore has about 141 buildings and 2258 families. So, in order to avoid the hassle in composting at each home, a ward has been set up, which would be used together by different colonies, to ease the entire process. The ward has also channelized the waste management with the help of on spot incinerators.
People in Indore have been practicing composting for many years now, in many different ways. Most residents in the city have been composting since the last 5 years in the comfort of their homes. Certain residents have also tied up with Nagar Nigam for composting the waste in every ten days. It usually takes 45 days to convert wet waste into compost but with the help of bins, it can be done in a span of 10 days. Nagar Nigam has also tied up with few residents for dry waste management at a fixed price.
The viral song ' Gaadi Wala Aaya Ghar se Kachra Nikal' was originally composed in Indore to spread awareness about waste management. The song is now being used in many other cities like Lucknow & Kanpur to boost awareness about systematic waste disposal in the city.
The initiatives taken by the residents have been instrumental in the development of the ward, that has further helped in accumulating and processing the waste generated.
