Towards zero-waste weddings: Indore couple ties knot the sustainable way!

You'd probably be aware of the fact that Indore ranks high in the cleanliness aspect, bagging the cleanest city award for six straight years, and continuous efforts towards a green revolution can also be seen happening in the city. Meanwhile, the citizens of the city are not far behind, with individual strides in the right direction.

In such a quintessence of an event, a couple in Indore didn't wed in the traditional way, but got married the sustainable way! This unique wedding saw a zero-waste celebration, where no plastic, thermocol, or paper was used and any waste generated was disposed off immediately.

What went into the sustainable wedding

The couple, Vardhan Mehtra and Alexandra, who met each other at Harvard Design School and graduated together, decided to go for a sustainable wedding and their families seconded the decision.

At the function, an Indore-based start-up Swaha converted any wet waste from the function into compost inside a mobile waste processing van. There turned out to be negligible dry waste and what was there was recycled. This way, no garbage from this wedding reached the trenching ground or landfill, causing zero-waste generation and no pollution.

The concept of a zero-waste weddings has been promoted in Indore and given a push for a bit. Social activist and conservationist Padma Shri Janak Palta McGilligan from Indore also keeps nudging the youth in the direction. She has also taken workshops on the same and motivated the youngsters to host a sustainable marriage in life.
