Even in this age of information and technology, some people belonging to the rural parts of India are still not able to access the basic necessities of life. In an attempt to make education accessible for women, a girl from Jaipur's Bassi opened a library in her own village. After realising that the girls of her village were not allowed to travel to the library located at a distance of around 14 kilometres, Kavita Saini made her mind to bring the library to the girls instead.

Free library for girls!

Talking about the reason behind starting this library, the wonder woman of the Bassi village said, "Women in our village did not have access to a library and the nearest library was 13 to 14 km away. In such a situation, they had to travel far for studies. Families refused to let the girls travel for fear of molestation. So, I opened this library in the village itself.". With this unique and thoughtful initiative, Kavita, who is currently pursuing her graduation has become a poster girl for education in the country.

Located at a distance of about 25 kilometres from Jaipur, this one-room library for women has a collection of 398 books on various subjects. According to Kavita, the library is open every day from 9 AM to 5 PM and the books are free for all the girls here.

Meanwhile, the women of the Bassi village have taken up various works to gain financial independence. While some skilled women take up embroidery work, others make handmade toys that are sold at the market later. In a situation like this where lots of people returned to their villages after having lost their regular jobs due to COVID, handicraft has acted as a saviour for the villagers.

As per an official involved in this program, many people have improved their financial condition with the help of this skill-based handicraft work. Additionally, in line with the 'Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao' campaign, women in this village are also being taught the English language in order to ensure better employment opportunities.
