Mundota fort, a heritage structure with a history of over 450 years and counting, was built by the Naruka Rajputs in the early 14th century at the Mundota village, a 30-minute ride from the Pink City. Located on the hilltop of the Aravalli Ranges, the fort in Jaipur not only served as a lookout place but also provided an early line of defence against attacks on the city.
After a battle with the Naruka clan, the Nathawat Rajputs won possession of this fortress, among other things and remain the owner to this day. After years of restoration, the fort is now a part of India's first luxury heritage polo resort!
After almost a century, in the year 1550, Thakur Jaswant Singh, a contemporary of Mughal emperor Akbar decided to build a palace on the foothill of the fort. The generations that succeeded this scion of the illustrious Nathawat clan further expanded the palace and added to its glory. However, the fort had succumbed to the inroads made by time and the years of abandonment.
The restoration was a strenuous challenge as the hills were too steep with no approach to reach the top. However, the owners managed to reinstate the property and opened it up for the public as well. After seven exhaustive years of restoration, this fort and palace is now a luxurious 5-star property one can stay at.
The palace and fort, as it is seen today, tells the tale of its courageous patrons. It has been transformed into one of the most breathtaking travel destinations of the territory by adding state-of-the-art modern facilities while keeping the original structure and style intact.
Spread over ten acres, this mansion is a gem of Rajput-Mughal architecture with traditional courtyards, terraces, pavilions and gardens which invite a host of birds and even dancing peacocks!
With special emphasis on the fact that this was a strategic warrior fort, meant to protect rather than house royalty, the furnishings of this extraordinary hotel are stark and minimal. Each suite, room and tent is unique, radiating an intimate and welcoming vibe and adding to boutique hotel feel to the guests at the same time.
India's only active polo ground with a heritage property, this place is ideal for riders and horse lovers. Apart from enjoying private polo matches, the guests can take up any of the experiences curated by the five-star property. From enjoying champagne at the sun-downer at Mundota Polo Ground to dining at the step well, there are a plethora of options to choose from like the Jeep Safari, Heritage Walks, Turret Dining, Rural Excursion and so on.
The palace and fort, as they can be seen today, tell the tale of its brave and loyal benefactors. And if you wanna explore this history while living in a royal set up in Jaipur, plan your stay at the Mandota Palace.
