Reportedly, the European Investment Bank (EIB) has recently sanctioned a loan of Rs. 5,551.99 Cr for the Kanpur Metro project. This will be a 31.4-km long network, comprising of two corridors and the UPMRC body is aiming at commissioning its first stretch by the end of next year. The track ranging from from IIT Kanpur to Moti Jheel, has been identified as the 'priority corridor'.

There will be 22 stations on route number one (from IIT to Naubasta which will be 23.8 km long) and eight, on route number two (from CSA to Barra; 8.6 km in length). The total of 22 stations on the first corridor will include 14 elevated stops while 8 would be underground. The second corridor is said to have 8 stations, 4 of which would be elevated and the rest would be underground.

This metro project is expected to lessen the traffic congestion on the roads due to the private and public vehicles plying on the streets. The daily functioning of metro trains will even lead to effective crowd management and reduce prime time rush which has been plaguing the city for years now. Inadequate parking facilities and the surging pollution levels in Kanpur, can now be improved and kept in check.
