Food, special dishes made by inmates to be sold outside Kanpur Jail at cheaper prices

Prisoners in Kanpur Jail will also be given special training by chefs if the first phase of the initiative yields better results.

The DM of Kanpur, Vishakh G Iyer has come up with an initiative under which people outside jails, those leading an everyday, regular life, will be able to eat food cooked by prisoners. For this, a counter will be set up outside the Kanpur jail, and the sale of food cooked by inmates will begin at relatively low prices for all to try.

Work for inmates; Cheaper food for the underprivileged

This initiative aims to achieve two goals in one. First of all, the food cooked by Kanpur jail inmates will be sold at lower costs, compared to street food across the city. Hence, it will be a source of relatively inexpensive daily food for the underprivileged. Secondly, this initiative in Kanpur jail will offer work to the inmates, as well.

Once the food counter outside the jail is set, authorities will first gauge the peoples' response. Based on that, preparations will be made to provide inmates with special training, given by chefs. This way, prisoners getting out of jail will have a career option to rejoin the community and get their life back on track.
