Ever thought of watching movies or listening to music online without an active internet connection? Well, this will soon be a reality. Recently, IIT Kanpur, in collaboration with Prasar Bharati, has come up with a proof-of-concept around which direct-to-mobile technology can be developed.

They collaborated back in 2021 and since then, have been working closely to develop a technology that can efficiently implement the D2M-as-a-Service.

What is direct-to-mobile (D2M) broadcasting?

The technology is dependent on the convergence of broadband and broadcast. In simple words, broadcasting multimedia, by means of a broadband. Think of it as radio that shows visual content. This new tech will allow mobile phones to receive terrestrial digital TV signals, offering buffer-free video content without the internet, just like a radio or a satellite TV.

D2M-as-a-Service to benefit millions of users

As per a Deloitte study, over 750 million people in India use smartphones and this demand for smartphones is expected to increase at a CAGR of 6%. Coupled with the development of high-speed broadband connectivity, the growth in smartphone users is expected to cross the 1 billion user mark by 2026.

This first-of-its-kind, indigenous technology will cater to the needs of many by offering a wide network of digital content. From entertainment to education, from health to emergency situations, D2M-as-a-Service will be a game changer in the field of information dissemination.

Its application can be used to broadcast crucial info on users' mobile screens. Moreover, smart implementation of D2M can help in countering fake news, issue emergency alerts and offer assistance during disaster management crises.

Heading towards its usage in the entertainment sector, D2M-as-a-Service will open gates for universal live news and sports streaming platforms.
