Adding speed to the ongoing work, the UP government has set aside ₹747 crores for the Kanpur Metro expansion project. At present, Uttar Pradesh Metro Rail Corporation is working at a brisk pace on two corridors in Kanpur. The allocated fund will be used to amp up existing work on two upcoming routes that are under progress under the Rapid Transit System.
Notably, Kanpur Metro started welcoming passengers in December 2021 with just the priority corridor ready for the run. While the 9-km stretch is open for all, the work on the other corridors is yet to complete. As per the plan, UPMRC is working on the 24-km long stretch connecting IIT Kanpur to Naubasta and CSA to Barra-8.
According to the stipulated deadline, the IIT-Kanpur to Naubasta corridor along with the CSA to Barra-8 is expected to be operational by December 2024.
In addition to the budget set aside for Kanpur Metro, the state administration also plans to develop metro lines in various cities in the state at an estimated cost of ₹1,910 crores. This includes the upcoming Gorakhpur Metro line project, Agra Metro and the much-awaited Delhi-Ghaziabad-Meerut Regional Rapid Transit System (RRTS) project.
