The Kanpur Regional Transport Office has tweaked the process of renewing a commercial driving license. The transport authority has set up a refresher course as a mandatory pre-requisite to replace an expired commercial driving license. For this, the RTO has also roped in the Model Driving Training and Research Institute at Vikas Nagar in Kanpur to conduct a 3-day training refresher programme. Reportedly, a completion certificate from this institute will set the ball rolling for the renewal process.

Earlier, it was compulsory for all commercial DL candidates in Kanpur to undertake the refresher course at the Divisional Transport Office, for which the candidates had to submit a fee of ₹826. It was then followed by a 3-day training at the Model Driving Training and Research Institute in Vikar Nagar. As per reports, the refresher course and training was limited only to the city which created troubles for the commercial driving license holders. The 3-day course also taxed on their time and as such, it was scrapped off.

However, with the realignment of the renewal process, the RTO has re-instated the refresher course for all those whose commercial licenses have expired. The RTO has also stated that driving licenses can be renewed without having to take the refresher course within one month from the date of expiry.

Those who have crossed this window will have to take the refresher course, by order. A refresher course is not required for the renewal of any driving licenses but those in the commercial category informed an administrative officer at the RTO.
