With aspirations to grow as an industrial hub in Uttar Pradesh, Kanpur is attempting to strengthen multiple production sectors in the city. After the construction of Leather Mega Cluster started in Ramaipur, the latest development has ushered in good news for the city's shoe industry. As per reports, the industry would soon get a horde of skilled craftsmen with the proposed establishment of a training institute in Kanpur-Unnao Leather Cluster(KLC) Development Company.

Reportedly, the Ministry of Micro, Small & Medium Enterprises has submitted a detailed project report, seeking a fund worth ₹25 crores from the central government. As per reports, the Executive Director of KLC informed that a Memorandum of Understanding shall be materialised between KLC and the ministry after the government approves the DPR.
To be established on the lines of Footwear Training Institute in Agra, the new institute is expected to train a total of 600 individuals. In addition to this, around 200 individuals would be coached through the outreach programs of the institute. Anticipated to initiate courses in the upcoming financial year, the academy would host programs to teach designing, cutting and stitching with a timeline of 6 months to 2 years.

Proposed to be developed over an area of 14 thousand square feet, this facility shall start welcoming students from July onwards. It is being said that the shoe industry will benefit from this training centre in multiple ways. While this initiative shall definitely lead to a boom in employment opportunities, the trained individuals would be equipped to start their own entrepreneurial ventures too.
According to reports, the domestic leather industry in Kanpur accounts for 20 thousand crores while products worth 8 thousand crores are exported. While this sector is marked by a dearth of skilled labourers, it is projected that the new centre would aid in removing this shortage.

Known as the 'Manchester of East' in the past, Kanpur was famous for its leather and textile products. Marred by the destructive activities during the British rule and post-independence negligence, the city had lost its reputation in this sector.
