Kanpur is currently facing disturbances in public transport while residents are unable to book online cabs to reach their destination. Alternative modes like tempos and autos are also available at a premium, as many of them have gone on strike.
It is noteworthy that All India Motor Transport Congress has called a nationwide strike against the new Bharatiya Nyay Sanhita (BNS). The latter is a new penal code, yet to come into effect, which mandates strict penalties for hit-and-run cases. These include up to 10 years of imprisonment, along with a hefty fine of ₹7 lakh.
Furthermore, some drivers who are responsible for the supply of fuel and vegetables have also gone on strike. Panic has ensued across Kanpur, regarding an extension in truckers' strike, which could lead to serious fuel shortage. Hence, people are queuing up at petrol pumps to refuel their vehicles.
Those lucky enough to book an online cab are having to pay unreal amounts of money for the shortest rides. Any further reports on the strike's extension or calling off are awaited.
