Uttar Pradesh Transport Department is picking up the pace in leveraging new-age technologies like Artificial Intelligence (AI) in many of its public services. The latest to join is the procedure of issuing a learner's licence. People in Lucknow, Kanpur and other UP districts will soon be able to get their learner's licenses, digitally! Reportedly, under the 100-day action plan, the authorities have already started preparing for this digital shift across the state.

Aadhar card no longer mandatory for online application

While the online learner licence application facility was available in UP for quite some time, it was limited to Aadhar cardholders only. The online portal verified the physical presence of applicants by matching their Aadhar card photos.

However, those who did not have cards had to go to the Regional Transport Office (RTO) for the test. With this move, people without Aadhar cards will also be able to apply and partake in the test from their homes.

A boost to digitisation

The digital process is said to completely remove the role of officials in the process. To make sure the entire procedure is automated, the department plans to set up automatic testing stations as well. A special type of testing track is being established for the same.

With the help of dedicated software, people will be able to give their driving tests on these tracks. The AI-based software will monitor and detect mistakes of the applicants. Based on this, it will automatically decide if the applicant has qualified for the license or failed the test.

Adding transparency to the process

The Transport Department aims to build around 10 automatic testing stations in the next two years. Soon, this initiative will also be rolled out to issue all the regular licenses across the state.

Apart from adding convenience for the public, this move will also prove to be beneficial in adding transparency to the entire process. With a shift from manual to AI-based technology, the possibility of fraud and unethical cases will also be eliminated from the entire application procedure.
