With an aim to enhance the higher education sector, the Uttar Pradesh government has been trying, for long, to expand the number of engineering and medical institutions in the state. In the latest string of events, the Chief Minister of the state announced that all the 75 districts of Uttar Pradesh would be housing a medical college soon. The proposed project aims to open medical colleges in each of the 16 districts across the state that do not have any college till now.

While an array of announcements have been made, a suitable policy for executing the declared interventions will be formalised soon. It has been said that the new medical institutes shall be constructed through a public-private partnership. Besides, the available infrastructure in the existing colleges shall be improved too. In addition to increasing the avenues of medical education, the proposal also aims to boost healthcare amenities for the last beneficiaries in line by increasing the health centres in rural and urban spaces. Also, a number of districts including Gorakhpur, Agra and Varanasi would soon get super-speciality hospitals.

In a conference that happened two months ago, the Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh was quoted saying, "Out of a total of 75 districts in Uttar Pradesh, many still require medical colleges. There is an opportunity for investors to make these medical colleges on the PPP model."

Given the need for hospitals in Uttar Pradesh, the state government has promised complete support to any private entity that wishes to set up a hospital in the state. The new institutions shall not only facilitate education for the medical aspirants in the state and other parts of the country but also welcome students from foreign nations.

Multiple initiatives by the state government to boost the medical sector

With the setting up of premier AIIMS institutes in Gorakhpur and Rae Bareli, the state government has already attempted to accelerate its objective of strengthening medical education and healthcare facilities. Now, it has also been planned that the latest state-of-the-art laboratories shall come up in the hospitals across the state to deal with situations like the current pandemic. In order to execute this plan, the state's medical department shall request the Central government for a fund of ₹20 lakhs.

When the government is focused on assuring increased access to good quality education for the students of professional courses, the progress in future becomes inevitable. While the upcoming 16 colleges will surely lead to more opportunities for medical aspirants, their contribution towards expanding healthcare facilities would be remarkable as well.
