RT-PCR diagnostic test, known due to its use during the COVID-19 pandemic, is a realiable diagnosis method for detecting the genetic material of pathogens, particularly viruses.
Now, in a revolutionary breakthrough Lucknow-based CSIR-Central Drug Research Institute has developed a DNA gel stain called 'GreenR', which is critical in RT-PCR and other diagnostic tests.
Till now, India has remained dependent on foreign nations for imports to conduct several of these tests. However now, this indigenously developed innovation developed by CDRI Lucknow is expected to reduce reliance on other countries.
Nucleic acid staining dyes are used for detecting nucleic acids i.e. DNA and RNA. Historically, the most common dye used for gel staining was ethidium bromide, however, due to its toxicity and mutagenicity other DNA dyes that are safer to the user and the environment, are preferred.
Although these dyes have substantial costs as they are expensive to import and have a patent royalty on their usage which costs around Rs 4000-5000 per test.
The invention of 'GreenR' is expected to significantly reduce expenses for life sciences researchers.
