The hustle and bustle of board exam preparations are often stressful times for students, owing to peer pressure, familial expectations and so much more. Recently, unfortunate instances like anti-sleeping pill abuse, and self-harm, among others, also came to surface.

Students and parents need to understand that exams are just a part of life. While doing well is important, it's not the end of the world if one doesn't score as high as people's expectations soar. During this time, all students must prioritise their mental health.

'Simple steps can contribute significantly to mental well-being'

Knocksense spoke to the co-founder of Lucknow's counseling centre, OpenHearts, and here's what Gibson Joy had to say: "The journey through examinations can be demanding, but implementing simple steps can contribute significantly to mental well-being and help avoid the pitfalls of depression and anxiety."

So, here's a comprehensive guide for both students and their parents to cultivate a healthy mindset, supported by both practical advice and scientific insights.

First & foremost — Healthy nutrition & rest

Our electronic devices need charging and, so do we! Consuming a balanced diet, nutritious food, and ensuring that you get sufficient sleep are some fundamental ways to maintain a healthy body and mind.

P.S. A well-rested mind enhances focus, in turn, positively impacting your mood and overall well-being.

Incorporating physical activity into your routine

As per the National Institutes of Health, engaging in aerobic exercises such as jogging, cycling, walking, gardening, dancing, and so on, has been proven to reduce anxiety and depression.

Working out routines, no matter how short-timed they are, not only helps release feel-good hormones but also improves mental health by enhancing self-esteem and cognitive function.

Slow down, breathe & reflect on causes of distress

Taking a moment to focus on your breathing can be a powerful stress management technique. It allows one to identify and address tension, anxiety, or intense emotions residing in the body.

Remember, conscious breathing and a little meditation go a long way!

Boosting focus to avoid last-minute stressful situations

Maintaining a razor-sharp, goal-oriented focus is important during exam preparations. Eliminating distractions, such as excessive TV or mobile use, could help you stay on track and, thus, avoid last-minute panic situations.

Additionally, visual cues like posters with quotes you resonate with or specific goals you have can serve as reminders of your objectives.

In challenging moments, revisit your vision

Writing down your vision, whether it's getting into a preferred school or pursuing your dream career, reinforces your commitment and reinstills your "why". It also becomes a source of motivation, often a reminder that success extends beyond exam results.

Revisit your vision, when you can, and remember that setbacks do not define your future. Embrace the learning process and believe in your potential.

Most importantly, seek help when needed

Don't hesitate to reach out for support if you're feeling overwhelmed. Talk to a teacher, school counsellor, or a trusted adult. Remember, seeking professional help is a sign of strength, not weakness.

Your future is not determined by a certificate but by the resilience you exhibit in facing life's trials. Keep your head high, believe in yourself, and take each step with confidence toward your goals. Success is not just about marks; it's about the journey towards a brighter future!
