A testament to artistic brilliance and an affluent past, Bada Imambada & Chhota Imambada in Lucknow entwine within their walls countless chronicles of history. Originally established as congregation complexes, the monuments have evolved to serve the city and its residents in unparalleled ways. While the two edifices are sparkling jewels of the city's tourism circle, their contributions amid crisis situations like the floods of 1960 or the current pandemic have been assuredly remarkable!

Records of history take us back to 1784 when Awadh stood enveloped amidst a deadly famine. It was then that Nawab Asaf-ud-Daula incepted the idea of Bara Imambada, in order to ensure employment and livelihood for all. Later when the city witnessed unprecedented flooding in 1960, the towering buildings and thick enclosures of the complex acted as a saviour for Lucknow. It is said that a large count of city-dwellers took refuge in its halls during those trying times.

Today, it is Chhota Imambada that has stepped forward to rescue the city. Doubling up as an inoculation centre, the campus is safeguarding the lives of many by acting as the place for the administration of immunity booster jabs. It has also been stated that the conversion of a religious location into immunisation site will help in spreading awareness amongst the illiterate and down-trodden in the society. Famously called the 'palace of lights', the magnificent structure is now aiding to uphold the torch of life.

Knock Knock

While there are no ways to rightfully praise the monumental buildings for their merit, we must acknowledge the need for preserving and conserving these impeccable emblems of heritage. Besides assuring no litter during our visits, we must also spread awareness regarding the same amongst others. Additionally, the administration needs to take sufficient steps for restoration works so that the buildings remain untouched by ravages of time.
