The University of Lucknow was one of the first government-run institutions in India to establish a dedicated astronomy program. The university houses a specialized Department of Astronomy, offering students the opportunity to pursue a B.Sc. degree in Astronomical Education.

Notably, the department has produced numerous esteemed alumni, many of whom have gone on to become prominent scientists at esteemed organizations such as the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) and various international space research institutions.

The university now wants to give a massive overhaul to the planetarium, aiming to implement extensive infrastructural upgrades and incorporate state-of-the-art equipment and projection systems. This will enable students to observe constellations, gain knowledge about seasonal sky patterns and receive up-to-date information regarding forthcoming astronomical events.
